Moving and Storing Household Items

When a family member passes away unexpectedly, there is not only grief but so much other stuff the family has to do. Hello, my name's Bernice. My mother-in-law passed away last year. Here we are a year later, and it's beginning to feel like we finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. When it came to cleaning out Mom’s house, I had to put my organizational skills to work. My husband has three siblings, so furniture and belongings were going in four directions. There were some items we wanted to put in storage until our children were old enough to use them. I found a moving company that was willing to work with us. They worked to make sure the items were delivered to the locations we specified. I want to share more about this experience with you and hope you can take away some helpful information.

Self Storage Tips For Your Massive Shoe Collection

Benefits of Storing Expensive Clothing and Shoes

Self storage solutions generally do not require a long-term commitment, which means that you can pay by the month, and return the keys to the storage unit at any time. This option will also give you freedom to rotate your shoes as seasons change, which will keep clutter to a minimum. Self storage also ensures that all of your pricey shoes are not stored at one location, which could protect you against total losses in the event your home is broken into.

Tips for Packing and Storing Clothing and Shoes

- Do not choose plastic containers for a long-term storage solution. This is due to the possibility of damaging items that are sensitive to moisture. The lids on plastic containers do not permit air to flow through them. This can result in moisture accumulation, which could eventually cause mold.

- Thwart possible insect activity by choosing climate controlled units. Clean shoes to remove loose dirt prior to storage. You can also choose to add mothballs, moth crystals, or lavender satchets to storage containers. Moths and carpet beetles thrive in dark areas. They lay their eggs and their larvae, feast on cloth material. Imagine them feasting on your $1,000 designer shoes.

- Ensure that you do not store old shoes with new shoes, and also do not allow dress shoes and tennis shoes to come into contact with each other. Mixing shoe types can result in shoes getting scuff marks, which may be impossible or difficult to remove.

- If possible, store shoes in the original shoe boxes. Otherwise, invest in shoe containers. Wrap your shoes in tissue wrap, and insert rolled socks into the toe area to ensure that your shoes do not lose their shape while in storage. Store shoes pointing heel to toe in the same manner that they are sold in stores. If you plan to stack your shoes, place heavy shoes such as sneakers and boots on the bottom layer, and you can add lighter shoes such as dress shoes or sandals on top of the heavier shoes.
